The River tells the story of a lonely little boy, neglected by his parents and left in the hands of a hired babysitter. Based on a short story by Flannery O’Connor. The babysitter, a deeply religious Southern fundamentalist, takes the child to a “healing” service on a riverbank. When the boy is handed over to the preacher to be baptized in the churning waters, he is taken by surprise. As the preacher lifts him from the water, he tells the boy that from now on, “he counts, he is somebody.” The boy is deeply impressed. The next morning when he is home again, neglected and forgotten, and surrounded by the empty whiskey bottles and cigarette butts from his parents’ party the night before, the boy remembers how it felt to be “somebody.” He leaves the house, determined to get back to the river. He tries to relive the experience of the day before, but his attempt ends in tragedy.
