This portrait pays tribute to a unique band whose music recalls the sound of the ragtime and jazz bands of the early 1920’s. Through extensive footage of Kid Thomas and his band playing in New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, the program presents the band’s particular style of music and portrays many faces of a society and culture threatened by the devastation from Hurricane Katrina. The diverse styles of the music and the varying moods it evokes are illustrated by performances at a variety of different functions - not just concerts, but also parties, funerals and other events.
