Xiao Feng (“Little Zephyr”) is a great fan of his grandfather’s, the one who is in charge of the music room. He has won several “Lu Sheng competitions” in the area, but he is best known for being a master craftsman of Lu Shengs. The instrument is not only honored but it also brings luck. Old people live to a hundred; and young men find the best wives. The Lu Sheng is the favorite instrument of the Miaos and Dongs, peoples living in the remote mountains of southern China. They have played this mouth-blown organ with its clear, ringing sound since time immemorial. Any man blowing into it from a mountaintop can be heard for miles around. This year Little Zephyr has asked his grandfather to help him make his most cherished dream come true: at the new moon he wants to compete in the regional Lu Sheng competition.
