Dedicated to the memory of Richard Murray, (1942-2006), senior curator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum

The mottled khaki-and-green motif is all around us - on military equipment and on everything from backpacks to bikinis. But where did it come from?

INVISIBLE tells the story of a brilliant but troubled artist, Abbott Thayer (1849 -1921), and how his discoveries led him to unlock the mysteries of the natural world to reveal how animals conceal themselves in nature.

Despite a bitter feud with Teddy Roosevelt, Thayer worked obsessively to persuade the Allies to adopt his camouflage methods in World War I. Today Thayer inspires audiences of all ages with his rich legacy as an artist, an ardent environmentalist and the father of modern camouflage.
