This film documents the struggle of the Jewish community of Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland) to survive the brutal assault of the Nazis. The community survived because its people took the unprecedented step of selling their property and possessions to Jewish communities abroad and using the money to finance emigration of the entire community. Directed by Sidney Reichman, “Danzig 1939” combines interviews with survivors, film footage from 1939, and photographs of the lost community to paint an unforgettable portrait of the devastations of war and of the Holocaust that Nazi Germany inflicted on Europe’s Jews.
